Blue-purple blooms in a classic, easy-growing package set the New Love Clematis Shrub apart. But this perennial is even better than the timeless vine you love because it forms a bushy, upright silhouette that’s self-supporting.
So, its star-shaped indigo flowers grow without the need for trellises or other garden supports. And its petals are extra unique, blooming into a curled shape from late spring into summer and again in the early fall.
Planting & Growing
First, find an area with full sun to partial shade (4 to 8 hours of sunlight) and well-drained soil, or select a container with drainage holes for planting. Once you’ve selected a location (or your container, which should be twice the size of the shipped container), dig a hole that’s around twice the size of your plant’s root ball and just as deep. Then, place the shrub, tamp down the soil and water to settle the roots. Generally, it’s ideal to check your soil about 2 to 3 inches down for dryness. If the soil is dry here, it’s time to water. Watering about once or twice weekly is a good rule of thumb. After your plant has completed blooming for the year, prune back for shaping and fuller blooming the next season. Any dead or damaged areas can be removed throughout the year.
