At this time of year people often ask if it’s too early to plant. After all, we could still have a couple more cold spells.
Conventional wisdom tells us not to put plants out until the May long weekend, and that’s a good rule of thumb. But this is a great time to start hardening off your new plants. That means bringing them inside in the event of an overnight frost, and leaving them outside on warmer nights.
If we do experience one of those late-season cold snaps, it’s never a bad idea to bring pots inside and cover new plants that haven’t had a chance to acclimatize yet. By next season your perennials, shrubs and trees will be ready to withstand anything Mother Nature can throw at them.
